Reed furniture from the 1930s

A set of a three seat sofa and two armchairs arrived to my workshop recently. It was easy to see, that it was not the first time that the furniture's „Epeda” springs and cushioned seats needed refurbishing.

As I dismantled the furniture down to its bare frame, traces of previous attempts of refurbishment slowly became visible.

found layers of various fabrics, sponge and seagrass remnants jumbled under the upper cushioning, which means, that whoever had worked on the furniture before, had never once completely dismantled the furniture, merely they put the next layer on top. The client did not require any joinery work, as the solid wood part of the furniture were in excellent condition, so did not need it.

Since for a perfect job, no element of the traditional upholstery process could be left out, I started the work from the very first one... Strapping and spring tying from the bare frame, and btw. I was lucky , as after some training springs were in perfect condition. Seagrass, canvas, upper cushioning and Belgian fabric chosen by the customer.

My client was extremely kind and, knowing that I like to know the history of furniture, investigated who the original maker was.

József Hauszmann, master of joinery. He left us a wonderful legacy of woodwork.
