I would like to introduce someone to you.
He is none other than Endre Thék (1842 - 1919), the master cabinet, furniture and piano maker, founder of the first Hungarian furniture factory, which developed from a joinery workshop he founded in 1872. He is credited with the wooden decoration and furnishing of many public buildings and palaces of the 19th and 20th centuries, he was a member of the board of the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry and an enthusiastic supporter of industrial education.
He is now remembered because of an exceptional honour, namely, when a very kind lady from the Thék family contacted me to ask if I restored and upholstered their more than 100-year-old chairs. I was delighted to say yes. I restored the unique fan-backed furniture using traditional techniques and materials (seagrass, spring) and although the quality of the pictures is not the best, I tried to capture some of the important processes of refurbishing. And I am proud to tell you that I am commissioned to refurbish a sofa set, as well.
