There are projects that are particularly close to our hearts—such as when a long-time client returns with the same piece of furniture after many years. This time, a client who had commissioned us nearly 18 years ago reached out to us again to entrust us with the restoration of their beloved furniture set. Such returns hold special significance for us: these relationships and the timeless quality of our work are the best proof that our dedication to our craft truly adds value.

The subject of this restoration is a large, distinctive Dutch-style sofa set. These pieces are known for their solid construction, deep seating, and prominent, comfortable armrests, and their design serves both comfort and durability. In this current project, we have preserved the original character: we worked with genuine cowhide leather, which is not only a timeless choice from an aesthetic standpoint but also “lives” and matures continuously with use.

The history of leather use dates back to ancient civilizations, where it was already used to cover seating surfaces and everyday objects. In the Middle Ages, leather became a symbol of durability and status, and through vegetable tanning, a material was created that retained its quality for generations. Interestingly, traditional tanning processes used tannins extracted from oak bark, which not only made the leather durable but also gave it a unique, patinated appearance—a quality that remains one of its greatest assets today.

The uniqueness—and at the same time the difficulty—of this furniture set lies in its intricately detailed upholstery. The sofa’s surface is constructed from 84 separate, precisely cut pieces of leather, while the armchair features 33. This presents a significant technical challenge; every single element must fit perfectly so that the final result is uniform, taut, and aesthetically harmonious.

We began the work by stripping the old upholstery, using the pieces as templates for the new cut, and then completely replacing the foam to ensure the furniture’s comfort was restored. The new upholstery is made of rich, masculine-looking cognac-burgundy cowhide leather, which beautifully highlights the furniture’s contours and lends an elegant, warm character to the entire piece.

Renovations like this always go beyond a simple repair. Here, not only has a piece of furniture been renewed, but a long-term trust has also been reaffirmed. The story of a customer returning after 18 years shows that quality materials and careful craftsmanship truly represent timeless value, and for us, this is the true essence of our craft.
